Zara Lyness is a Co. Down based Irish artist. She has an integrated approach to her practice, combining sculptural, ceramic, mark making, live processes and social engagement in her work. She uses gesture and objects in her work that reflect her interest in the individual, relationships and identity.
This series of sculptural works is inspired by ageing and the menopause. Zara uses the violin as a metaphor for the female body. The violin scroll heads are abstract fragments of how peri and menopausal women feel disconnected from their ‘normal’ selves.
“Although there is more openness about the subject than in previous years, the menopause is still a difficult subject to talk about and there are many symptoms that women do not recognise and have difficulty with. We have learnt through the recent periods of lockdown restrictions how important connection and communication is.” With this work Zara hopes to generate a space for conversation about the subject.
