Former West Belfast MP and subsequently Louth TD Gerry Adams is one of Ireland’s best-known political figures. He was also the founder of Féile an Phobail now in its thirty-third year.

Author of a number of non-fiction books and a noted pamphleteer, he is also a published writer of three previous book of short stories. His latest book, Black Mountain & Other Stories (O’Brien Press, 2021), is being launched during Féile. They are stories of love, politics, war and of friendship; portraits of Ireland, and especially Belfast, old and new, in times of struggle and in times of peace, showing how our past is always part of our present. Sometimes sad, sometimes funny, always moving, these are stories of ordinary people captured with wit, with heart and with understanding.

One of the most exciting and engaging writers to emerge in recent years is Ballymena-born Jan Carson whose books include Malcolm Orange Disappears (2014), Children’s Children (2016), Postcard Stories (2017) and Postcard Stories 2 (2020), the brilliant The Fire Starters (which won the EU Prize for Literature in 2019), and The Last Resort (2021, publ. Doubleday Ireland). Set in an Antrim seaside caravan park The Last Resort examines complex family dynamics, ageing, immigration, gender politics and the decline of the church. The Irish Times described it as a work of great empathy and imagination which ‘has Jan Carson’s hallmark combination of pithy Northern-Irish wit, profoundly imagined characters, spiced with the off-kilter and deliciously mad.’

What is there to say about the great phenomena that is Cork’s prolific Tadhg Hickey! He is creative director of the critically-acclaimed comedy troupe, CCCahoots, and wrote, directed and starred in the RTE sitcom, The School. His satiric Brexit video, Loyalism, but in a house share in Cork, clocked up more than one million views online and he is currently working, Brexit, but it’s a house share in Cork—The Musical. His satires take on racism, sexism and homophobia in Ireland, Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians, US imperialism and its ‘War on Terror’ and a range of ‘Histories’ and other videos. Tadhg will talk about his life, the role of a comedian in society and the creative impulse behind his writing. And—he is also not a bad singer! ‘Outstanding physical and comedic performer’ - The Scotsman
