“Ethnic Cleansing”, The Irish Wars of Independence (1919-23), and Academic Interpretations and Responses / “Glanadh Eitneach:, Cogadh na Saoirse (1919-23), Na Léamha Acadúla air agus na Freagairtí Acadúla dó

This event will be live-streamed from Glór na Mona, Gael-Ionad Mhic Ghoill via www.facebook.com/glor.mona and a small number of invited guests will be in attendance

After 1980, the nationalist struggle for independence in the 1920s was reinterpreted as a sectarian conflict.

Presented by academic historians, new evidence confirmed that unremembered, sectarian conflict had raged across southern Ireland leading to the “ethnic cleansing” of Protestants. This panel discusses how and why this new narrative emerged without verifiable evidence.

All of the panelists are experts in the field and in their different ways critical of the prevailing historical consensus sometimes known as ‘revisionism’, but perhaps more accurately identified as a counter-insurgency historiography directed against republicanism.

Fearghal Mac Bhloscaidh lectures in history at St Mary’s University College, Belfast. Niall Meehan is the Head of Journalism at Griffith College, Barry Keane is a respected teacher of history and published independent scholar and John Regan teaches history at the University of Dundee.

Beidh an timeacht seo á sruthú beo ó Ghlór na Móna, -Ionad Mhic Ghoill trí www.facebook.com/glor.mona agus tabharfar cuireadh chuig roinnt bheag aíonna teacht chuige.

Indiaidh 1980, rinneadh athléamh ar streachailt náisúnaithe ar son na Saoirse sna 1920í mar choimhlint sheicteach. Dhearbhaigh fianaise nua, arna cur i láthair ag staraithe acadúla, gur leath chomhlint sheicteach gan cuimhne uirthi ar fud dheisceart na hÉireann ina ndearnadh “glanadh eiteach” ar Phrotastúnaigh. Pléifidh an painéal an dóigh agus na fáthanna ar tháinig an insint nua seo chun cinn gan fianaise infhíoraithe.

Is saineolaithe san ábhar seo iad na painéalaithe go léir agus cáineann siad, ina mbealaí féin, an comhdhearcadh stairiúil coitianta a dtugtar ‘athbhreithniúchas’ air uaireanta, ach tá cur síos níos cruinne air mar staireagrafaíocht fhrithcheannairce dírithe in aghaidh an phoblachtachais, b’fhéidir.

Is léachtóir staire é Fearghal Mac Bhloscaidh i gColáiste Ollscoile Naomh Muire, Béal Feirste. Is Ceannasaí na hIriseoireachta é Niall Meehan i gColáiste Griffith. Tá meas ar Barry Keane mar mhúinteoir staire agus múineann an scoláire neamhspleách, John Regan, a bhfuil saothair foilsithe aige, stair in Ollscoil Dhún Dé.
