About this event

Albie Sachs, the anti-apartheid activist, human rights lawyer and writer, was appointed by Nelson Mandela to serve on the first Constitutional Court of South Africa in 1994. After twice being detained in South Africa for his anti-apartheid activities in the movement led by the ANC, in 1966 he went into exile in England.

Later he moved to Mozambique to work as a Law Professor, where on April 7, 1988 he was blown up by a bomb planted in his car by South African security services. He lost his right arm and vision in one eye. Mr Sachs will discuss his life in the anti-apartheid struggle, his role in drafting the South African Constitution and his 15-year judicial career at the Constitutional Court of South Africa. He will speak about meeting the man who organised the planting of the bomb in his car, and how he developed the concept of soft vengeance. He will also speak about his various visits to Belfast and Dublin and offer some reflections on possible constitutional arrangements embracing all the people who live on the island of Ireland. Supported by Féile an Phobail’s Debates and Discussion Programme.

Cheap Nelson Mandela Albie Sachs, an gníomhaí frithchinedheighilte, dlíodóir um chearta an duine agus scríbhneoir, le dul i seirbhís ar an chéad Chúirt Bhunreachtúil san Afraic Theas in 1994.

Coimeádadh san Afraic Theas é faoi dhó mar gheall ar a ghníomhaíochtaí frithchinedheighilte san eagraíocht a raibh an ANC i gceannas uirthi.

In 1966 chuaigh sé ar deoraíocht i Sasana. Bhog sé go Mósaimbíc níba mhoille i mí Aibreáin 1988 mar ar oibrigh sé mar Ollamh Dlí agus mar ar phléasc seirbhísí slándála na hAfraice Theas buama sa charr ina raibh sé. Chaill sé a sciathán clé agus a radharc i súil amháin. Pléifidh an tUasal Sachs a shaol sa streachailt frithchinedheighilte, a ról i ndréachtú Bhunreacht na hAfraice Theas agus a shlí bheatha bhreithiúnach 15 bliana i gCúirt Bhunreachtúil na hAfraice Theas.

Labhróidh sé faoi uair ar bhuail sé leis an fhear a d’eagraigh leagan an bhuama ina charr agus faoin dóigh ar fhorbairt sé coincheap an bhogdíoltais.

Labhróidh sé fosta faoi na cuairteanna éagsúla a thug sé ar Bhéal Feirste agus ar Bhaile Átha Cliath agus déanfaidh sé machnamh ar shocruithe bunreachtúla féideartha a d’fhéadfadh gach uile dhuine cuimsiú ar oileán na hEireann. Tacaithe ag Clár Plé agus Díospóireachtaí Féile an Phobail
