About this event

The Irish Hunger Strike of 1981 was a watershed moment in Irish history.

Ten men died on Hunger Strike in the H Blocks of Long Kesh, civil unrest was rampant across the island and the world looked on in awe as the battle for political status intensified.

Séanna Walsh, former blanketman, republican prisoner and former OC of the H Blocks, Síle Darragh, OC of the women prisoners in Armagh, and Tom Hartley, key Sinn Féin strategist and member of the Relatives Action Committee, will reflect on this period and how it shaped the past 40 years.

The event will be chaired by veteran republican Joe Austin. Supported by Féile an Phobail’s Debates and Discussion Programme.

Ba chor cinniúna i stair na hÉireann í an Stailc Ocrais Éireannach in 1981. Fuair deichniúr fear bás i H Bhlocanna na Ceise Fada. Bhí corraíl shibhialta fhorleathan ar fud an oileáin agus d’amharc an domhan ar chúrsaí le hiontas agus eagla, agus an troid do stádas polaitiúil ag géarú.

Déanfaidh Séanna Walsh, iarfhear pluide, iarchime poblachtach agus iarOifigeach Ceannais sna H Bhlocanna, Sile Darragh, Oifigeach Ceannais na mbanchimí i bpríosún Ard Mhacha, agus Tom Hartley, príomhstraitéisí Shinn Féin agus ball de Choiste Gníomhaíochta na nGaolta, machnamh ar an tréimhse seo agus ar an dóigh a raibh tionchar aici ar na 40 bliain seo a chuaigh thart.

Beidh an seanfhondúir poblachtach Joe Austin ina chathaoirleach ag an imeacht. Tacaithe ag Clár Plé agus Díospóireachtaí Féile an Phobail.
